Johnnie Johnson

Johnnie L. Johnson "Shorty", age 76 of Gary, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Southlake Methodist Hospital. He was born on February 22, 1948, in Alabama to the late William and Dorothy Johnson. Johnnie was a loyal Evangelist who devoted his life to God. He especially loved traveling to Belize to preach. He was a member of Prayer Chapel Church in Hammond. Over the years, he found great joy fostering many children.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Johnson; children, Johnnie (Tabitha) Johnson, Jr., Christina Johnson, Angelica Johnson, Charles (Alicia) Johnson, Esperanza (Logan) Sammons, Kayla Johnson, LaCrystal Martin; grandchildren, Stevie Johnson, Harmony Martin, Logan Sammons, Jr., Evelynn Johnson, Zuri Jackson, Zuri Martin, Osiris Johnson, Malikai Jackson, Joshua Johnson, Sophia Johnson, Azariah Johnson, Emeryscyn Johnson; and 8 brothers and sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Johnson; three brothers; and five sisters.

A funeral service for Johnnie will take place Friday, February 21, 2025, at 6:30 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart with Pastor C.J. Turner officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 2:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at St. John St. Joseph Cemetery in Hammond.
