Josef Wimmer, age 85 of Hobart, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 3, 2013. He was born on February 13, 1927 in Mitrovica, in the former Yugoslavia, to the late Franz and Theresia Wimmer. After emigrating to the United States with his family, Josef worked tirelessly at the Budd Company and Western Steel, both in Gary. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, the Northwest Indiana Beekeepers Association and D.A.N.K. But mostly, this beloved husband and father enjoyed working outdoors in his garden, and watching soccer and the TV news He loved reading the newspaper and debating the issues of the day. He was a generous host and skilled craftsman, and enjoyed European traditions of making sausageand sharing humorous stories with his numerous friends, neighbors and family. He spoke 5 languages.
He is survived by his devoted wife of over 56 years, Gertrude Wimmer of Hobart, IN; his one daughter, Gerti (Kevin) Zaccone of Hobart; 2 older sisters, Josefine (Frank) Lehner of Portage; Stefi Perez of Argentina; as well as 2 grandchildren, Stephanie and Max, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends from around the world. He will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his elder brother, Emil Wimmer, and 1 sister, Anna Gucich.
Funeral services are Monday, January 7, 2013 beginning with 9:15 a.m. prayers at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart and proceeding to St. Joseph the Worker for a 10 a.m. mass of Christian burial with Rev. Stephen Loncar officiating. Entombment will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville.
