JOSEPH E. CHABES, age 79, of Portage, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022.  He was born to the late Eusevio and Lillian Chabes on June 6, 1943 in Gary, Indiana.  He had attended Nativity Catholic Church and was a retiree of US Steel. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Carol (nee Reese); son, Michael Joseph of Fife, WA; 2 daughters, Diane Renee of Chicago, IL and Janice Marie (Joe) Whittington of Hope, IN; 3 grandchildren, Luke Chabes, Wesley & Wyatt Whittington; 2 great grandchildren, Asher Whittington and Dawson Whittington; 3 brothers, Frank Chabes, Rudy (Eileen) Chabes and Duke Chabes; 3 sisters, Adeline (Jim) Vargas, Carmen (Jerry) Regalado, Juanita Lara; other loving family.

Joseph was also preceded in death by siblings, Jesse, Lupe, Ricky, Ida and Lonnie.

There will be a funeral service for Joseph on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 3 p.m. with visitation from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage, IN. Services will conclude at the funeral home with cremation to follow.
