Joseph Popp
Hobart, Indiana

Age 94, passed away Thursday January 16, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 9, 1919 to the late Peter and Anna (Chomycz) Popp in Chicago, Illinois. Joseph was a retired manufacturers representative and a retired owner / founder of Chart Pool USA, Inc. in Portage Indiana. Joseph proudly served the country he loved during World War II as a medic in the US Army. Joseph served in the Second Portable Surgical Hospital attached to the 155 Infantry Regiment, 31st Infantry (Dixie) Division. Joseph was a very dedicated steward of the Lord and concentrated all of his efforts toward helping others. Joseph served on the board of directors at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston Indiana and believed very strongly in providing kids with a good direction in life. Joseph also worked quite closely with The Gideons International where he volunteered in distributing Bibles. Joseph had a contagious smile and a love of people and was always willing to help anyone in need. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his family, two sons, Bruce R. Popp (Anna) Popp of Hobart, Gregory R. Popp of Hobart; three daughters, Dianne (Raymond) Ledvina of San Pierre, Lydia H. (Mark) Hughes of Crown Point and Anita Popp of Valparaiso, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Joseph is preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel (nee Szymanski) Popp and second wife, Elinor (nee Hegeman) Popp; parents, five brothers, Michael, Antone, John, Steve and Stanley.

A funeral service for Joseph will be held on Monday, January 27, 2014, 11:00 am directly at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1150 W. 49th Ave., Gary, with Pastor Maxwell Anokute officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd. Hobart from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
