Joseph Peter Shoppa, age 70, of Portage passed away Friday, August 14, 2015. He was born on May 17, 1945 in Gary, Indiana to the late John and Mary Shoppa. On October 4, 1973, Joe married the love of his life, Linda Strudas. He was a dedicated member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in New Chicago and retired from US Steel in 1999. Joe was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing in his free time. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.

Joe is survived by his wife: Linda (nee Strudas) Shoppa; sons: Christopher (Tina) Shoppa, Daniel (Sara) Shoppa; daughter: Allison (Kevin) Stanzione; grandchildren: Bailey Shoppa, Reece Shoppa, Emma Shoppa, Abigail Shoppa and one on the way; brothers: John (Greta) Shoppa, Jerome (Veralyn) Shoppa; many loving nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents: John and Mary Shoppa, brother: Frank Shoppa.

Visitation for Joe will be held Monday, August 17, 2015 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart with a prayer service at 4:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 am Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 3530 Illinois Street, Hobart, IN starting with prayers at the funeral home at 9:30 am.
