Lawrence K. Calloway Sr.

LAWRENCE K. CALLOWAY, SR., age 88, of Valparaiso, IN passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at home.  He was born on March 18, 1930 to the late Vollie and Velma (Harrell) Calloway.  Lawrence worked as a guidance counselor and retired from Roosevelt High School after many years of service.  He was a longtime faithful member of First A.M.E. Church in Gary and enjoyed singing in the choir.

He is survived by his wife, Chong-Hui Calloway; 5 children, Lawrence Calloway, Jr., Waukegan, IL, Michael Calloway, Gary, IN, Velma Calloway, Joliet, IL, Kevin (Charlotte) Calloway, Lynwood, IL, Karen (Walter) Sharpe, Joliet, IL; 2 step-children, Linda Hughley, Valparaiso, IN and Christopher Hughley, Merrillville, IN; 5 grandchildren, Kevin Jr., Rachael, Michael Jr., and Steven Calloway, Nichelle Smith and Devin Battle; 2 great grandchildren, Nicheaun and Nariah; 3 sisters, Venita J. Wise, Spring, TX, Velma L. Lester, Bear, DE, Betty A. Taylor, Old Hickory, TN; brother, Richard (Linda) Calloway, Gary, IN; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lawrence was also preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Eula V. (Hunter) Calloway; sisters, Wilma L. Whittemore, Jeanette F. Young, and Shirley Calloway Jones.; and brothers, Lorenzo and Vollie Calloway.

Funeral services for Lawrence will be Thursday, November 8, 2018 at First A.M.E. Church, 2045 Massachusetts, Gary, IN with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Virgil Woods officiating.  Burial will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery.  Rees Funeral Homes entrusted with arrangements.
