Leon Smith, age 83, of Portage, IN and formerly of Barbourville, KY, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023.

Leon was born on June 18, 1940, in Barbourville, KY to the late Harrison and Mary (nee Messer) Smith.  He was an Army Veteran and worked as a millwright at Inland Steel.  Leon loved bowling and riding bikes.  He enjoyed his work at the Portage Marina and was a Chicago Cubs fan.  He was a good ol' southern boy, a simple man, and loved his life and his family deeply.

A special thank you is extended to Leon's loving granddaughter, Kelli Johnson, for her dedication to her grandfather's care.

Leon is survived by his children: Teresa (Rich Stover) Smith and David (Stephanie) Smith; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister: Imogene (Randall) Brown; sister-in-law: Myrtle Smith; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog: Lucy.

Leon is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Viola; son: Tommy Smith; parents: Harrison and Mary; and brothers: Alonzo Smith and Lonis Smith; and nephew: Mike Smith.

Family and friends may gather at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel (5341 Central Ave, Portage) on Thursday, August 3, 2023 from 10:00-12:00.  A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 12:00 P.M.  Leon will be laid to rest next to his wife Viola at Blake Cemetery.
