Leonard J. "Joe" Carrol, age 87 of Portage passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013. He was a Portage resident since 1989 and was formerly of Hobart. Leonard was born on April 14, 1926 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Edmond and Ethel Carrol. He was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran. Leonard was retired from NIPSCO where he had worked as a dispatcher. He also worked for the Porter County Sherriff's office. He was a member of American Legion Post 260. Leonard was in charge of the Portage Township Food Pantry for over 10 years.
He is survived by 1 son, Phillip (Deb) Carrol of Hobart, IN; 5 daughters, Phyllis (Robert) Gresser of Hobart, IN; Pamela (George) Draschil of Crown Point, IN; Peggy King of Chicago, IN; Paula Kay Karwick of OK; Patricia Mihalek of Hobart, IN. 13 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Paul Carrol, 1 brother, Clarence Fouts, and 1 sister, Lucille Ellenbrand.
Memorial donations in Leonard's honor may be made to the Portage Township Food Pantry.
Memorial services will be Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage with Rev. Richard Brown officiating. Memorial visitation will be Thursday just prior to the service from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel. Cremation will take place with Rees Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
