Louis R. Milligan

Louis R. Milligan, 82 of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away on August 11, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Louis was born on January 11, 1944, in Gary, Indiana, to Rae and Frieda (DeMass) Milligan. He married Joyce (Harris) Milligan on September 4, 1962, in St. Joseph, Michigan, they shared 56 years of marriage and raised a loving family. Louis was a hardworking man who spent 47 years as a Locomotive Engineer for Inland Steel/ArcelorMittal before retiring in 2009. Above all Louis was a devoted family man. His children described him as simply the best father any child could ask for. He loved spending time with his family and was known for giving everyone their own special nickname. Louis enjoyed trains and baseball and was a big fan of the Chicago White Sox as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers. A true handyman, he enjoyed working with his hands and could often be found tackling a project. He also loved the outdoors, fishing and camping at his favorite places, Mackinaw Michigan and Turkey Run. Louis also had a great love for dogs and always had one or several at one time. Louis will be remembered as a hardworking and devoted family man whose greatest joy was the people he loved. His humor, the special nicknames he gave those around him, and the countless memories he created with his family will be cherished for years to come. Louis is survived by his 5 children, Robert "Bob" Milligan, Lisa Milligan, Denise Milligan, Scott Milligan, Brenda (Travis) Moreland. His grandchildren, Tarin (James) Stoker, Paige Milligan, Ariel Dahlin, Christopher (Noel) Moreland, Brianna (Mason) Kronebusch, Savannah Moreland, Katie Milligan. 13 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew and many other friends and family. Louis was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Joyce Milligan; his parents Rae and Frieda Milligan; his sister Donna Mackey; and his grandson Jonathan Dahlin.

A memorial service for Louis will be held Monday, August 24, 2026, at 6:00pm at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave. Portage, Indiana 46368. Burial will be held privately. A memorial visitation will be held Monday, August 24, 2026, from 4:00 pm until the time of service at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel.
