Maria DeJesus Chavez Garcia, age 101 of Lake Station passed away Monday, October 14, 2013. She was born on February 22, 1912 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico to the late Claudio and Julia Moncivaiz. Maria was a Lake Station resident for the past 80 years. She was a member of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Mexican Society, the Our Lady of Guadalupe Society, and the Golden Age. Maria enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
She is survived by 8 children, Natalie DeLeon of Chicago, IL; Eva Avila of Lake Station, IN; Mario (Peggy) Chavez of Hobart, IN; Jesus (Janis) Chavez of Hobart, IN; Honey Chavez of Lake Station, IN; Marciano (Kathy) Chavez of Lake Station, IN; Agapita (Billy) Vega of Portage, IN; Esther (Tony) Cruz of Michigan City, IN; 2 sisters, Petra Calbiyo, and Cecelia Moncivaiz, 25 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Chavez Garcia, son, Antonio Chavez, daughter, Alicia Chavez, grandchildren, Tammy Chavez, and Danny Chavez.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 18, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. directly at St Francis Xavier Church with Rev. David Kime and Rev Eduardo Malagon concelebrating the mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Portage. Visitation is Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Rosary service at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
