Maria Melagro Weiss, age 76, of Hobart passed away Friday January 30, 2026, at Powers Health in Hobart. She was born August 27, 1949, to the late Damaso and Hilaria Sanabria (Torres) Serrano, in Bario LaCasa, Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. Maria enjoyed going to the casinos, shopping, gardening, and caring for her family.

Maria is survived by her loving husband, Juan Weiss of Hobart; her daughter, Jennifer Weiss of Lake Station; her granddaughter, Alicia Miranda; three brothers, Joe (Antonia) Serrano, Danny (Audrey) Serrano, Robert (Deana) Serrano; three sisters, Julia (Antonio) DeJesus, Juanita Del Valle, and Norma (Mike) Martin; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Carla Serrano; and two brothers, Antonio Serrano and Edward Serrano.

A Rite of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Wednesday February 4, 2026, beginning with 10:15 am Prayers at Rees Funeral Home 600 W. Old Ridge Road Hobart, Indiana and the processing to St Francis Xavier Catholic Church 2447 Putnam Street Lake Station, Indiana where Rev. Jaime Perea will officiate Mass at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday February 3, 2026, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. at the funeral home.
