Mariel D. Houlihan, age 76, a resident of Portage and formerly of Chicago, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011. She was born on June 23, 1935 in Chicago, the daughter of Otto and Viola Danek. Mariel was married to Martin Houlihan on November 23, 1971 in Chicago. She had worked for over 35 years as a secretary for Con-Rail Railroad. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Portage, attended Super – Seniors, played Mahjong, and enjoyed book club at the Chesterton Library.

Mariel is survived by her loving family, niece Karina Danek, San Diego, CA, niece Patty Dazzo, New Lenox, IL, cousin Gordon LaRue, Kissimmee, FL, cousin Arleen Bauer, Aurora, IL, cousin Carol Schmitt, Racine, WI, sister-in-law Joan Houlihan, Orland Park, IL, caretaker Danielle Kleckner, Hobart, dear friend Kathy Melson, Dyer, dear friend Sue Wilkinson, Chesterton, and other loving family and good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Otto and Viola, her husband Martin, her brother Clifford, and her brother Donald.

A visitation for Mariel Houlihan will be held from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Rees Funeral Home – Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, November 28, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church of Portage, 2637 McCool Road, Portage, with Reverend Dennis Ticen, officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen Park, Illinois. Memorials in Mariel's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Portage.
