Marsha Rae Nelson, age 73 a longtime Valparaiso resident passed away peacefully Sunday, January 28, 2024.

She was born in Gary, Indiana on April 7, 1950, to the late James and Vera Petretta.

Marsha is survived by her two sons, Jason (Melissa) Veach of Chesterton, IN; Dave (late Tammy) Morris of Eddyville, KY; Christine Swelnis, who she loved as a daughter, of Chesterton, IN; sisters, Cheryl Karanja of Kenya, Africa, Pamela (Nick) Callas of Roselle, IL; Sheila (Rocky) Abner of Hobart, IN; five grandchildren, Natalie, Garrett, Tabi, Evan and Marsha, thirteen great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and step children.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, William "Bill" Nelson, and brother, James Petretta.

Marsha was a hard-working woman whose first job was at a steel mill, worked in factories, as a correctional officer, head custodian and a bartender. Marsha had many artistic talents as well as a beautiful singing voice. She enjoyed riding Harley motorcycles with her late husband Bill. Marsha was also an amazing cook, arm wrestling champion and enjoyed hosting parties & gatherings with her many dear friends and family. In her later years she enjoyed caring for her beautiful flowers in her garden, doting on her grandchildren, singing to them and storytelling. She also loved the comfort and companionship she received from her many furry friends, especially Peanut and Lucy. Marsha was a kind, caring and compassionate person. She will be deeply missed by so many who knew and loved her.

Funeral services are Sunday, February 4, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage with Rev. Charles Strietelmeier officiating. Cremation will follow.  Burial of cremains will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery, Portage.  Visitation is Sunday, February 4, 2024, just prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel.
