Obituary

Mary Josephine Corey, age 100 of Hobart passed away Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Portage. Mary was born to Asel and Mary Hodge in Fredonia, Kentucky on July 20, 1912. She married Edward L. Corey on April 11, 1936. He preceded her in death in 1963.
Three children were born to this union, son, John Corey who along with his wife Jumil and daughters Coco and Cleo are living in Auckland, New Zealand. The oldest child Barbara died in 1939 at the age of 2. Edward L. Corey, Jr. (Sonny) died in 1951 at the age of 11.
Mary is survived by her son John and his family; one sister, Mildred Matthews of Chamois, MO; 2 brothers, Donald Bruce (Lu) Hodge of Hobart and Harold (Ophelia) Hodge of Marion, KY. She is also remembered fondly by many loving nieces and nephews whom called her their special Auntie Jo.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and 7 brothers; Randell, Roy, William, Vinson, Wilber, Rawels and Asel Hodge.
She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Hobart for many years and served in different areas, devoting time and attention to each detail.
Mary was employed by Washburn Realtors as a painter/decorator and worked well into her 80's. She had no fear of heights and would paint from a scaffold extended over a deep stairwell. She obviously had no fear of hard work either.
She and husband Ed opened their home often to her siblings as they came north for education and employment. They also extended their hospitality to many as Mary was a very good cook and loved to entertain.
The very cruel disease of Alzheimer's struck Mary in her later years, but as any of her caregivers will tell you, it didn't rob her of her sweet spirit or her sense of humor. She appreciated every kindness shown her and would sometimes jokingly refer to her walker as her horse and buggy.
