Mary A. Smallen, age 83, of Portage, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2015. She was born on May 30, 1932 in Saybrook,Illinois to the late Edward and Dorothy (nee Burke) Van Winkle. She was a member of Church of God in Portage and was in charge of Operation Blessing. Twenty years ago she received the Key to the City of Portage. She will always be remembered as a woman who provided a home and support for many in need. Mary is survived by her two brothers,Larry (Elaine)Van Winkle in Newburg, New York and Ervin (Linda) Van Winkle of Kansas; two sisters, Catherine (George) Cope of Leroy, Illinois and Dixie Curtis of Downs, Illinois numerous nieces and nephews, numerous surrogate grandchildren and other loving family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Van Winkle.
A Funeral Service for Mary will be held Friday, November 13, 2015 at noon with Pastor Jerry P. Martin officiating directly at Central Avenue Church of God, 5120 Central Avenue, Portage, Indiana. Burial to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 10:00 am until time of service also at Central Avenue Church of God.
