Mary Ellen Wielgus-Haskell passed peacefully from this life the morning of March 7, 2024 at Magnolia Gardens, Southern Pines, NC. She had been fighting cancer for the last 7 months and stayed positive and focused until the very end. Mary was born on September 16, 1949, in Gary, Indiana. She graduated Lew Wallace High School in Glen Park, IN, in 1969. She retired from Joyce's Sportswear after 20 years of hard work. Mary moved to Southern Pines, NC, in 2020 to be close to her family. Mary's life was a testament to her faith and love for God and Jesus. She found joy in singing and dancing, often sharing these passions with her family and friends, creating lasting memories. An enthusiastic fan of McDonald's Quarter Pounder Meals and JJ's Pizza, Mary's simple pleasures included indulging in her favorite foods. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren, whether it was a simple conversation, a shared meal, or just being in each other's company. These moments were the highlights of her life. Mary's passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Mary Ellen leaves behind a legacy of warmth and joy. Survived by her two sons, Michael (Scarlet) Masson and John (Dustina) Masson and her sister Denise (Tim) Nelson. Her spirit will forever live on through her six grandchildren, Zakrey Masson, Jonathan (Alexis) Masson, Hope (Dustin Wolfe) Masson, Matthew (Nele) Masson, Morgan Masson, and Ethan Masson, As well as her three great-grandchildren, Royce H. Wolfe, Adelaide G. Masson, and Scarlet L. Wolfe. Nieces and nephews Laurie Wielgus, Amy (Shane) Miller, Jeffery Nelson, and Lindsey (Jake White) Nelson, and grand-nieces Layla Miller and Evelyn White. She was preceded in death by her father Victor Wielgus, mother Margaret Consorti, and brother Dennis Wielgus.
A memorial visitation will take place from 11:30am - 1:00pm Saturday, March 16 at Rees Funeral Home, Brady Chapel, 3781 Central Avenue, Lake Station, IN 46405, with a memorial celebration of life to follow at 1:00pm, also at Rees Funeral Home. Mary Ellen will be inurned at Calvary Cemetery in Portage following the service.
