Mattie Ruth Selvage, age 89, of Portage, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016. She was born on April 13, 1927 in Rising Fawn, Georgia to the late William Wallace and Mary Lue (nee Harper) Payne. She was a member of Central Ave Church of God, she was church Treasurer and volunteered for various positons serving from 1951-1996. Ruth worked for Portage Township Food Service from 1966-1997 and at Porter Memorial Hospital housekeeping from 1986-1997. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Ruth is survived by her loving children; three sons, Alton (Kaye) Selvage of Edwardsville, Illinois, Jack (Judi) Selvage of Portage, Roger Selvage of Kentland, Indiana; two daughters, Linda (Bill) Martin of Richmond, Virginia and Patsy Brasher of Alabaster, Alabama; 17 Grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myra Simms of Decatur, Alabama and Sarah Walters of Jackson, Tennessee, many other loving family members and friends.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, James W. Selvage; six brothers, Ollie Godwin, Almer Godwin, Ervin Payne, J.D. Payne, Lorimer Payne and Charles Payne; two sisters, Delia Harper and Louise Haddon.
In lieu of flowers donations to VNA Hospice in Valparaiso would be appreciated.
A funeral service for Ruth will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 11 am at Central Avenue Church of God, 5120 Central Ave, Portage, Indiana with Pastor Jerry Martin officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 2:00- 8:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home,5341 Central Ave Olson Chapel, Portage, Indiana.
Additional visitation will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016 from 2:00-8:00 pm at Scottsboro Funeral Home, 1502 County Park Rd. Scottsboro, Alabama 35769. A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 11:00 am. with Pastor Ray Hardin officiating.Burial will take place at Free Home Cemetery.
