Melvin L. "Mel" Guth, age 80, of Hobart, passed away Friday, July 1, 2016 at VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso. He was born on July 20, 1935 in Brownsville, Pennsylvania to the late Leo and Carmella Guth. On April 20, 1954, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, he married the love of his life, Doris Praskavich. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. Mel retired from NIPSCO in 1994 where he worked as a station operator. He was a member of the American Legion Post #454, and the Hobart Moose Lodge Post #783. Mel was an avid sports fan. In his free time, he enjoyed watching NASCAR and bowling in local leagues.

Mel is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Doris Guth; sons, Richard (Marcia) Guth, Jeffrey (Grace) Guth, Steven (Michelle) Guth, Donald (Jodie) Guth; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brothers, Louis (Mary Ann) Salain, Daniel (Harriet) Guth; sister, Dolly Carbonara; many other loving family members and friends.

A funeral service for Mel will take place Friday, July 8, 2016 at 10:00 am at Rees Funeral Home, Brady Chapel, 3781 Central Avenue, Lake Station with Rev. Beverly Brown officiating. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Portage. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
