Michael Christopher "Big Chief" Stenger, age 55 a longtime Gary resident passed away Thursday, May 7, 2020.  He was born on May 29, 1964 in Gary, Indiana.  Michael worked as a laborer for Local #6 .  He loved fishing and canoeing and also loved archery which he did with his daughter.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia M. Stenger of Hebron, IN; his wife, Sherri Martin of Gary, IN; three daughters, Amanda (Ted) Stenger of Alexandria, VA; Gabby (Sam) Holtman of Chicago, IL; Sarah (Michael) Richardson of Roswell, NM; 5 siblings, Donna (Grady) Smith of Tulsa, OK; David W. Stenger of Merrillville, IN; Laura A. (Ed) Davis of Hebron, IN; Donald "Matt" (Autumn) Stenger of Hobart, IN; Scot P. (Dena) Stenger of Lake Station, IN; two step-sons, Glenn (Ravyn) Martin of Lake Station, IN; Brandon (Kate) Martin of Griffith, IN; grandchildren, Lynsey, Coraline, Darius, James, Eden, Thomas, Leiam, Jerry, Isabella, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald L. Stenger, and one brother, John Thomas.

We will be adhering to the Governor's Covid 19 restrictions during the visitation and service and will be restricting attendance in the building to 25 people at one time. Funeral services are Thursday May 14, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage.  Visitation will be just prior to the service from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
