Michael W. "Jake" Gabbard, age 67, of Valparaiso, passed on July 22, 2016 at Porter Regional, after a long & courageous fight with Prostate & Lung cancer. His wife & daughter were at his side.
Loving husband to Mary, caring father to Lisa Marie (Shawn) Crabtree & doting grandfather to 3 yr. old Zachary & 1 yr. old Jacob Crabtree. He will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his family and friends.

Michael was a lifelong resident of Valparaiso, graduating from Valparaiso high in 1967. After working with his father in construction, he decided to attend Ball State University where he received a B.S. degree in Business, graduating in 1974. He continued to work with his father, until his hiring with NIPSCO in 1976. Michael worked in the coal handling dept. at the Michigan City gen station until his medical retirement in 2010. Michael was an avid fan of both Ball State & V.U. basketball, taking many road trips to their away games. He loved to travel, do outdoor yard work and especially enjoyed giving his eldest grandson rides on the mower, allowing him to 'drive'. Michael was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Steelworkers local 12775, and AARP.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of Porter Regional ICU Department, for all the kindness and patience given to Michael and the family. To CNA Tony; he said he liked you and you were a good guy! And lastly, a special thank you, to nurse Jason & Jenny for all the time and gentle care you gave him. Very much appreciated.

Michael wished to be cremated, which will be handled thru Rees Funeral Homes, Hobart Chapel. There will be no services.
