Obituary

MILDRED J. SZOSTEK, age 91, a lifetime resident of Lake Station, entered into eternal life on December 24, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, George "Ziggy"; a son, Randy; and two brothers, Bob and Arnie Barbknecht. Her spirit survives through her sons: Dennis (Ruth Ann), Middletown, NJ; Garry (Sabrina) and Roger (Vivian), Lake Station; daughter, Nancy (Bill) Gibson, Portage; daughter-in-law, Yolanda Szostek, Weatherford, TX; special niece, Barbara Grusek; and one very special family member, Joe Stevens; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends who will miss her gentle spirit immensely.

She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life like reading the morning newspapers while drinking coffee, feeding and watching the birds, pulling weeds and working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and choosing the tastiest piece of candy from a box of chocolates. She worked many jobs throughout her life and was dedicated to perfection whether making airplane parts during WWII, ringing groceries at a register, icing cakes in a bakery or embroidering and sewing in a lettering shop. Always a lady, Mildred had many accomplishments in life but preferred to focus on the successes of others. She was a wonderful cook and excelled in sewing and knitting and shared those talents by helping and teaching others. Her family and friends took great pride in the many perfect, hand-made quilts, articles of clothing, etc., she spent countless hours making as gifts to them. Being honest, giving to and helping those in need were an innate part of her life. She supported many charitable organizations and volunteered for years with Meals on Wheels, Bethesda Thrift Shop, in her church, and with other groups. She laughed often and much, had an understated, wry wit, and found humor where others failed to look. She loved and was devoted to her children, family and taught them through example not simply by words. Mildred was a Christian who humbly served God in her daily life and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. We will remember her easy smile, gentle warmth and the difference she made in the lives of others.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harbor Light Hospice.
