Morris Schechner, age 89, of Portage, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was an army veteran of WWII and a member of the 1st Division, the Big Red 1. He served in the European Theatre, Africa, and Sicily.

Morris is survived by his loving wife, Irene; sons, Dr. Terry (Lore) Schechner of Valparaiso; Neil (Eileen) Schechner of Highland; daughter, Karen (Tom) Vrablik of Des Plains, IL; five grandchildren, Adam (Elizabeth) Schechner; Grant & Abigail Schechner, Irene & Stephanie Vrablik.

Morris was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage with Rev. David Banning officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.
