Portage, IN – Myrtice (Myrt) Tumblin, 83, of Portage Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2022 at home.
She was born July 1, 1939 in Kimberly, Alabama, the daughter of T.Z and Agnes Wood. She married Clayburn Sparks Tumblin on January 8, 1955. After 42 years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 1997.
Myrtice and Clayburn moved from Alabama to Indiana in 1959. Over the years, Myrtice co-owned a floral shop and worked as a hair stylist in Portage, but mostly enjoyed spending time with family, especially her children, grandchildren, and her many siblings, some who had followed her up from Alabama. She was proud to have lived long enough to see her great grandchildren. She loved vacationing in her home state of Alabama as well as Kentucky. In her younger days , she was a competitive bowler and Yahtzee player.
Myrt never saw a Western Movie or Television show that she didn't like. She memorized the TV schedule of Gunsmoke and enjoyed cross word puzzles and keeping score on Dancing with the Stars. She was also fond of several television preachers. Myrt never lost her hallmark southern accent!
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Mitchell, Malone, Thomas, and Richard Wood, and four sisters, Hazel Hensley, Francis Belcher, Donna Sullivan, and Sabra Lujan, sisters-in-law Shirley Wood, Wilma Wood, and Norma Wood, brother-in-law Wilburn Belcher, and one granddaughter, Courtney Castle.
Surviving is daughter, Anita Tumblin, two sons, Randy (Carroll) Tumblin and Nate (Kyla) Tumblin, four grandchildren, Hannah Tumblin Swale, Jonathan (Tiffany) Tumblin, Mavrick Tumblin, and Angel Knopick; as well as two great grandchildren Leah and Rowan Swale, and one brother James Paul (Sandy) Wood, two brothers-in-law Joseph Lujan and Ronald Sullivan, and thirty-three nieces and nephews.
Burial will be private for immediate family.
A Memorial Celebration of life will be held for family and friends on January 14 , 2023 at the Lakeland Arts and Crafts Building, 1200 Lakeland Park Drive, Burns Harbor, IN, from Noon until 3:00 p.m.
