Nina Marie Walters- Venkus, age 93, of Portage previously of Hobart, IN, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 16, 1919 in Sullivan, Indiana the daughter of John and Essie (nee Dodson) Gregg. Nina retired from Hi Styles Beauty Salon where she worked as a beautician. Nina will be remembered as a loving, step-mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, great-great-grandmother, mother-in-law and friend.
Nina is survived by her two step sons; Robert (Patti) Venkus of Maryland, and William (JoAnn) Venkus of California, four grandchildren; DeAnn (Rick) Pruitt of Chesterton, David (Cheryl) Coates of Portage, Scott Coates of Cedar Lake and Lori (Bill) Coban of Portage, six great grandchildren; Aaron (Samantha) Coates of Boone Grove, Brittany Coates of Portage, Alec Coates of Portage, Anson Coates of St. John, Andrew (Jordan) Coban of Valparaiso and Bailey Coban of Portage, five great-great-grandchildren; Kailyn and Maison Coates and Leah, Sadie and Ian Coban, and daughter-in-law; Charlene Walters of Hobart, many other loving family members and friends.
Nina is preceded in death by her husband Edward Venkus, son; Jerry Walters, daughter; Sharon Coates-Bannon and sister; Ruth (Tyke) Ebler.
The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Mary Medical Center 5th and 6th floor and the ER department as well as Vitas Hospice Care.
A funeral service for Nina will be Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart, Indiana 46342 with Pastor Dick Ebler. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
