Obituary

Patricia Ann Ferro (Nee Foltz) was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on August 28, 1950 to Bette L. Helser and Robert W. Foltz, who passed in 1996 and 1997 respectively.

Patricia attended Hannah Homestead, Brentwood Elementary, and New Haven Junior High and High school where she supported the NH Bulldogs and was in the National Honor Society. In the 1950's she was the Easter Seals poster child. Regardless of her physical limitations due to cerebral palsy, she excelled academically and earned a bachelor's degree at Southern Illinois University. She earned her Master's in Social Work at the City University of New York, and was employed as a social worker with Catholic Charities.  She was married to Gerard (Jerry) Ferro for 18 years, residing in Islip, New York and Orlando, Florida. After their divorce, she relocated to Fort Wayne where friends accompanied her to the Unitarian Universalist Church, Buddhist meditation, and feminist spirituality events.

Patricia reluctantly moved to Golden Living Center in Merrillville, in 2008 when she was in hospice for "failure to thrive." She recovered, and after a traumatic experience in 2014, she relocated to Miller's Merry Manor in Hobart. Since April 2015, she lived contentedly in the Portage Miller's Senior Living Center until she passed away on December 13, 2017 of natural causes, with her sister by her side.

Patricia loved being in nature and appreciated the beauty of flowers, birds and animals. Patricia is known for her kind, caring attitude, her beautiful infectious smile and her sparkling eyes. Her love for life was palpable. She was passionate about social justice, making front-page news protesting the Iraq war and advocating for the disenfranchised. She is survived by her older sister, Tanice Foltz, a professor at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana, as well as several cousins: Karen Mathews, Sue Thomlinson, David Foltz, Marsha Sauter, Joyce Martin, Darcie and Brian Foltz and an aunt, Betty Foltz and uncle, Don Harsch. Although saddened by her passing, her survivors are thankful that Patricia has been released from her earthly struggles.

She will be cremated and her ashes scattered. A memorial service will be held April 21, 2018 from 3-5 pm at the Miller Beach Aquatorium.
