Phonzo "Al" Klutts

Age 88, of Portage, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 surrounded by his family. Al was born on July 28, 1925 in Dyer County, Tennessee to George and Martha (nee Fussell) Klutts. Al proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Signalman. He worked as a millwright for US Steel Gary Works until he retired. Al was an active member of his church, Harvest Independent Baptist in Lake Station, Indiana. Al was known for being generous and always willing to help others. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. The family would like to thank the angels that took care of Al at Legacy Alzheimer's Unit at Avalon and at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso.
Al is survived by his dear friend, Elaine Duncan of Portage, Indiana; three daughters, Gloria (JR) Campbell of Westville, Indiana, Connie (Kenneth) Artz of Knox, Indiana, and Carol (Bud) Henning of Las Vegas, Nevada; two daughters-in-law, Kathleen Klutts of Mount Holly, New Jersey and Delores Hurlbert of Alta Loma, California; his sister, Jesse Pearl (Junior) Haynes of Tennessee, 14 grandchildren and many, many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Al is preceded in death by his beloved wife Hazel (nee Clement) Klutts; two sons, Greg Klutts and Jerry Hurlbert; two brothers, Robert Klutts and Alvin Klutts; sister, Jewel (Junior) Michael; great grandson, Justin DeWees; and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Andre Joseph officiating at Rees Funeral Home, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage, Indiana. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, Indiana. Visitation will be held Friday, September 6, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home.
