Obituary

Richard "Dick" Harlan White, age 78 passed away at Golden Living in Portage on January 21, 2020.   He was born on July 18th , 1941 in Gary, Indiana to the late Harlan White and Cloe Imogene (McDaniel) White. Dick graduated from Merrillville High School in 1959 and attended Moody Bible College for 1 year.

Dick knew that the Church was not his calling.  On January 23, 1960 he married GraceMary Finck.  He bought a "wrecker" and started a body shop where he found his calling for mechanical and body work.  He later worked at many body shops and owned another body shop called "Dicks House of Vettes".   He was a Local 150 retiree from the Teamsters Union.  He enjoyed many things in life including racing his stock car, golfing, visiting many casinos, traveling, and was a big NASCAR fan.  He lived life the way he wanted and had many famous sayings that he shared quite often:  "Do you know exactly what it is that you exactly need to know about what exactly it is that you are doing?"; "You need a get right with Jesus speech."    He was a great storyteller.   Known for his bellowing laugh.

Dick is survived by his children Michele White of Hobart, Sheri White Noris of North Carolina, Shaun White of North Carolina, Michael White of Hobart and Stacy Berbesque of Valparaiso; Grandchildren, Josh Gregor, Kevin Peirce, Christopher Stout, Nicole Stout Barnes, Andrew Stout, Alexis Gruber, Amanda Gruber, Victoria Gruber, Mercedes Gruber, James White, Emily White, Jason Berbesque, Nathan Berbesque, and Olympia Berbesque; Great Grandchildren: Ashton and Aiden Gregor, Kanen, Cole, and Leon Barnes, Keralena and Shane Stout.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife GraceMary White; 1 brother, Ralph White, 2 brothers-in-law, Michael Gordon and Butch Newbert.
