Richard W. Johnson ,"Rich", age 64, of Portage, IN and formerly of Valparaiso, IN, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023.

Rich was born on March 7, 1959 in Harlan, KY to the late Helen (nee Johnson) Vanover.  He worked for many years as a machine operator with several different companies including Orville Redenbacher.  Rich married Deanna Hall on October 18, 1998 and spent 25 loving years together.  They were faithful members and musicians at The Church of Jesus Christ in Portage. Rich earned a certificate through Penn Foster and was fond of electronics.  He set up the sound system in The Church of Jesus Christ.

Rich picked up the guitar at the age of 12 and from then on, his passion for the guitar grew.  He was a skillful and knowledgeable guitar player who was always searching for the perfect tone.  Rich enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the guitar and music with all. He started and operated his own guitar business "Rich's Guitar Repair and Maintenance" from his home in Portage.  During the  1980's, Rich became the founding member of Southwind, a southern rock band.  He was a beloved husband, son, brother, "Riches", and friend to many and will be missed deeply.

Richard is survived by his wife: Deanna of Portage, IN; children: Tara Johnson of Columbus, OH and Steven Johnson of South Bend, IN; brother: Ronald "Ron" Grubbs of Crestview, FL; step-father: Raymond Vanover of Lily, KY; parents-in-law: Gerald and Paula Hall of Portage, IN; "Riches kiddos": Madison, Allison, Aubrey, and Micaiah all of LaPorte, IN; and their dear cat: Max.

Rich is preceded in death by his mother: Helen.

At this time, there are no funeral services scheduled. Cremation and arrangements are entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel.
