Richard "Rick" Nunez, age 64, of Portage and formerly of Lake Station, IN, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
Rick was born on March 10, 1959 in Gary, IN to the late Ines and Guillermina (nee Serratto) Nunez. He was a graduate of River Forest High School, Class of 1977 and immediately went to work with Local 41 in Munster. Rick was a laborer from 1977-1984, when he went on to live in Texas for 12 years. While living in Texas, Rick greatly enjoyed his time working for the Bexar County Parks Department. When he moved back, he began working with Local 41 again from 1996 until his retirement at the end of 2022. Rick was attending Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church in Portage, IN.
Rick was a hard-working and helpful person. He could be counted on to help his neighbors through each season with snow removal, grass cutting, leaf raking, you name it. Rick enjoyed helping and volunteering at the Ss. Monica and Luke Catholic Church food pantry and soup kitchen. He adored his nieces and nephews and his grand-niece and nephews. Rick loved to meet up with his friends at several Region bars to have drinks and enjoy a plate of chicken wings.
Rick made the selfless decision to be an organ donor through Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donation in Chicago, IL. His selflessness and love for his family and friends will be remembered by all who were lucky to know him.
Rick is survived by his siblings: Linda (Gilbert) Dominguez, Ninon "Noni" (Orlando) Gamez, Diana (Pete) Moreno, and Joe Nunez; nieces and nephews: Leo (Cathy) Dominguez and their daughter: Kiyomi, Alex (Lisa) Dominguez and their son: Francisco, Tomas Dominguez, Gina (David) Bowen and their sons: David, Jr. and Sean, Crystal (Victor) Morales and their sons, Vincent and Christian; Orlando Estephan Gamez, and Isabel Gamez; and goddaughter: Yaracely Nunez Cacho.
Rick is preceded in death by his parents: Ines and Guillermina Nunez.
Family and friends may gather at Rees Funeral Homes, Hobart Chapel (600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart) on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 from 2:00-8:00 P.M. A rosary/prayer service will take place at 6:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place DIRECTLY from Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church (2949 Willowcreek Rd., Portage) on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Kevin McCarthy officiating. A visitation will take place a half hour prior to Mass. Cremation will follow funeral services.
