Richard Shane Smith, age 70, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 26, 1954, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, but raised on the shores of Lake Michigan in Miller, Indiana. Richard carried a deep love for his hometown and the cherished memories he made there, and was a former student of Wirt High School, Class of 1973. He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially the serenity of the Lake Michigan shoreline, which remained a constant source of peace and reflection throughout his years.
Richard is survived by his son Shane (Shawna) Smith; his beloved grandchildren Nathaniel, Collin, Amara, and Alexia Smith; daughter, Holli (Dave) Smith-Kostbade, grandson David (Jasmine) Kostbade, his sister Jamie (Dale) Holloway; his brother Robert (Blanca) North, niece Jamie, and nephew, Daniel. He was a proud and loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who valued family above all—especially his son. He is also survived by the love of his life, Connie (Davis) Wells and The Bodkin Family, who held a special place in Richard's heart.
He was preceded in death by his mother Bettye Sue (Carver) Phillips, father Johnny Smith, brothers Danny and Ronnie Smith, sister Suzie Smith Getman, nephew Joseph Phillips, and life partner, Carol. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and their memories remained with him always.
Those who knew Richard will remember his kind heart, his love of family, and the strong ties he kept to his roots. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at Rees Funeral Home in Hobart, IN on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, 2:00-8:00pm.
