Richard Springer, age 83 of Hobart passed away at home with his loving family by his side, on Friday, March 29, 2013. He was born in Gary, IN to the late Steven and Alice Springer. After He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict he found the love of his life and married the late Joan (nee Gale) in August 1955. They were married for 51 years.
He is survived by his loving family. Three daughters: Patricia (Gary) Cauley of Wanatah, IN; Cynthia Boyd of Hobart, IN; Dawn Halbrook of Jackonsville, FL; Two sons: Steve (Rosie Nolan) Springer of Schererville, IN; Richard (Diana) Springer of Valparaiso, IN; sister: Janet (nee Thomas), fifteen loving grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife Joan of 51 years, parents: Steven and Alice(nee Sopczak) Springer, stepfather: Joseph Thomas, sisters: Dorothy Schultz (nee Springer), Loretta Springer, son: Lawrence Brill.
He was employed at U.S. Steel, Gary as a Bricklayer for the blast furnaces for 27 years before he became disabled. He was a member of the Knigts of Columbus, VFW Post 5365, and American Legion Post 54.
Funeral services are Tuesday April 2, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart with Rev. Gerald H. Schweitzer officiating. A graveside service will follow at 12 p.m. at Oakland Memory Lane Cemetery, 15200 Lincoln Ave., Dolton Illinois. Because of the distance between the funeral home and the cemetery we will not be going in procession. Maps to the cemetery will be provided. Visitation is Monday, April 1, 2013 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. VFW/American Legion service at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
