Richard John Torres, age 77, of Portage passed away Thursday September 19, 2024, in Munster Community Hospital.  Richard was born February 21, 1947, in Gary, Indiana to the late Vernabe and Jennie (Huerta) Torres. He attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He was a fabricator at American Steel before becoming a correction officer working at the Lake County Kimbrough Work Release Facility. He was a hard-working family man.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of over fifty years, Evangeline (Jimenez) Torres of Portage; three children, Richard Torres, Jr. of Merrillville, Christine Torres of Niles, Michigan, and Joseph V. Torres of Portage; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas J. (Charles Zuehlke) Torres of Escanaba, Michigan, Paul Torres of Portage, and Robert (Orlett) Torres of Portage; a sister, Marie (William Breunig) Torres; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernabe Torres, Jr. and Rev. Frank Torres; and his nephew Matthew Nordyke.

Visitation for Richard will be Monday September 30, 2024, from 2-8 pm at the Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel with a 7 pm Prayer Service. Funeral services will be Tuesday October 1, 2024, at 11 am with Rev. Jaime Perea officiating at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Calumet Park Cemetery
