Roger Lee Hill, age 79, of Portage, IN passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023.

Roger was born on August 26, 1944 in Leon, WV to the late Mont and Bessie (nee Howell) Hill and was one of twelve children.  He was a member of the Labor Union 81 and retired in 1993.  After retiring, Roger worked for Vesuvius within the steel mills as an outside contractor.

Roger's passions include deer hunting, family gatherings, and good food.  He often took his boat out to Lake Michigan to fish.  His favorite form of fishing was ice fishing. Roger was a huge fan of Portage High School Football.  Roger followed game rosters, attended all games, learned the names and stats of the players, and even followed them down state for state championship games.

Roger was a regular visitor to Fighting Arts Dojo in Lake Station, owned by his son Brian.  He loved to visit with everyone who walked through the door. He was known as "Smiley" and became the unofficial mascot of the dojo.

Roger is survived by his wife: Franceen; children: Brian Hill and Kristie Hill; granddaughter: Emma Hill; twin brother: Ronald Hill as well as other dear siblings and a host of other dear family members and friends.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents: Mont and Bessie.

Family and friends may gather at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel (5341 Central Ave., Portage) on Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 11:00-1:00.  A Funeral Service will follow visitation beginning at 1:00 P.M.  Roger will be laid to rest at McCool Cemetery.
