Roger E. Mergl

Roger E. Mergl, age 83, of Portage passed away Sunday May 15, 2016 at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Roger was born October 2, 1932 in Gary, Indiana to the late Joseph and Dorothy (Dickson) Mergl. In the 60's Roger was a salesman for Shaver Chevy. Roger then became a Realtor that worked for Dick Gore Realty and Century 21 and served the Portage area for several years. Roger was a long time member of the Portage Exchange Club, American Legion Post #260, and Make Today Count through the Porter County Cancer Society. He was also a Classic Car and Classic Airplane Enthusiast. He will be dearly missed by his family and all those that knew him.
Roger is survived by his wife of 60 years Pauline Mergl; five children Joni (Robin) Fornoff of Smith River, CA, William (Anne) Mergl of Valparaiso, Daniel (Brenda) Mergl of Whiting, Janet (fiancé Frank) Hagan of Portage and Thomas (Sheli) Mergl of Portage; ten grandchildren Vincent (Jessica) Nygra, Tara (Joseph) Watkins, Claire Hagan, Egan Mergl, Judah Mergl, Alex Mergl, Bailey Mergl, Brandy Jordan, Lydia Mergl and Eli Mergl; three great grandchildren Sophia Nygra, Zayne Jordan and Wyatt Mergl; one brother David (Stephanie) Mergl of Hobart; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday May 19, 2016 at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel 5341 Central Avenue Portage, Indiana 46368 with Deacon Richard Huber officiating. Burial will follow in McCool Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
