Shelia Yvonne Hurt

Age 69 of Portage, formerly of Lake Station passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2023. She was born on July 18, 1953, in Harlan County, Kentucky to the late Clarence and Sally (nee Reed) Lawson. She graduated from Edison in East Gary. She worked as a certified nurse's aid at St. Mary's in Hobart and a secretary at Southlake Methodist in Merrillville for many years and later worked as a secretary for International Longshoremen's Associates for 20 yrs. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Hurt; five grandchildren, Madison, Evan, Skylar, Zach and Cody; her siblings, Margaret (Raymond) Lawson-Sierra, Lonnie (Betty) Lawson, Thelmer (Mary) Lawson and Libby (Andre') Joseph, and  many other loving family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, John Andrew Hurt; her father, Clarence Lawson; her mother, Sally Lawson; four brothers Dewey, Douglas, Allen, and Terry Lawson and two sisters, Barbara Flaningan and Janet Lawson.

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 12:00 p.m.at First Baptist Church of New Chicago 401 Huber Blvd. Hobart, Indiana 46342. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 12:00 pm also at First Baptist Church of New Chicago. Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel are entrusted with arrangements.
