Shirley L. Gunter
Age 82 of Portage passed away Monday, January 20, 2025. She was born May 16, 1942 in Milford, MI to Warner and Monette (Bozarth) Carter. She married the love of her life, Don Gunter, September 6, 1958. Later in life during her 40's she went back to school, earning her GED and her LPN license. She was a nurse at Whispering Pines Healthcare for several years before retiring to travel the country with Don in their RV. Later
on, she continued caring for people through Comfort Keepers in Portage. Throughout her life she enjoyed fishing, camping, playing POGO on her computer and talking to friends and family. Shirley is survived by her sons, Ronald (Ellen) of Conroe, TX, Richard of Wheatfield, IN, daughter Deanna of Nashville, TN; her mother, Monette Carter of Lake Station, IN; sisters Debra Carter of Lake Station and Susan Lewandowski of Chesterton, IN; brother David Carter of OH, 4 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her father, Warner Carter, husband, Don Gunter, daughter Donna Gunter, daughter-in-law Peggy Gunter, brother Bernard Carter and sister Janie Lambert.
Visitation will be from 5 pm–7 pm Monday, January 27, 2025 with service immediately to follow at Rees Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue Portage, IN with Rev. Mark L. Hostetler officiating. Burial will be  Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at 2 pm at Tate's Chapel in Galatia, IL.
