Sofia Kopanakis, age 87, of Lake Station passed away Thursday May 7, 2015 at the St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Sofia was born November 30, 1927 in Assos Korinthias, Greece to the late Nickoloas and Georgia (Kelamis) Tsimalis. She retired from JCPenney Co. Sofia was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Sofia was a member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

Sofia is survived by her loving husband Mel; her son George (Lisa) Kopanakis of Hobart; her daughter Niki (Dimitri) Syllantavos of Chicago; Her four grandchildren Menelaos George Kopanakis, Phillip D. Syllantavos, Amanda L. Hirsch and Dylan W. Stuckey; her brother Haralambos Tsimalis of Schererville; her two sisters Eugenia Galanos of Lake Station and Susie (Luis) Rizos of Orland Park, IL.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am Tuesday May 12, 2015 at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral 8000 Madison Street Merrillville, IN 46410 with Rev. Theodore Poteres and Rev. George Papas officiating. Burial will follow in Calumet Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3-8 pm with a 5 pm Trisagion Service.

Memorial gifts are preferred to Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
