Stella Mae Lind

Stella Mae (Cardwell) Lind, age 90, a longtime resident of Portage quietly went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. Stella who was affectionately know as "Nanny" was born on March 15, 1921 in Corinth, Mississippi the daughter of Vernon and Hattie Lindsey. Stella graduated from Corinth High School in 1940. Stella was married to Harold Lind on October 27, 1967 at their home in Griffith, Indiana. Stella worked as a candy manager for Goldblatts in Gary. Stella was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church of Portage, a member of the Brown Bag Bible Study, and helped with the church rummage sales. Her great joys were going to Lilly Lake at Three Rivers Michigan, gardening, baking pies, and making dishrags and scrubbers for family and friends. She also loved Southern Gospel Music.

Stella is survived by her loving family, daughter Barbara Schoonover, Portage, granddaughter Deborah (Dennis) Sobat, Portage, grandson Michael Schoonover, Portage, great-grandchildren Brittany and Brendan Gill, "adopted" daughter Edie (Bill) Johnson, Valparaiso, special caregiver Shirley Mann, Portage, and other loving family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold Lind, her husband Clarence Cardwell, her granddaughter Sheryl Gill, her son-in-law Howard Schoonover, and her step-son Gerald Lind.

A visitation for Stella will be held from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Rees Funeral Home – Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm on Sunday with Pastor Deborah Rousselle, officiating. Memorials in Stella's memory may be made to the 1st United Methodist Church of Portage or the V.N.A.
