Stephen A. Askren, "Steve", age 66, a lifelong resident of Merrillville, IN, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

Steve was born on December 9, 1956 in Gary, IN to the late Dale and Carol (nee Houghtaling) Askren. He was a graduate of Merrillville High School, Class of 1975. Steve went to work right away with Kmart and retired with about 40 years of service under his belt. He was a big fan of NASCAR and enjoyed going to Car Shows. His nieces and nephews as well as his great nieces and nephews were very precious to him; they felt like his own children. Steve is a beloved brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Steve is survived by his sister: Debbie (Darren) Aldridge; nieces and nephews: Richard, Robert, Ben, Angel (Jason), Nick, and Hannah; great nieces and nephews: Raven, Randi, Alice, Bella, and Emmett; and a host of dear extended family.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents: Dale and Carol; and brothers: Dale Askren, Jr. and Jim Askren.

There are no funeral arrangements scheduled at this time. Cremation and arrangements are entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel. Steve will be laid to rest with his family at Shiloh Cemetery in Bridgeport, Lawrence County, Illinois at a later date.
