Stephen L. Franko

Stephen L. “Spike” Franko, age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Northwest Health – Porter. Stephen was born on November 16, 1939, in Gary, IN., to the late Stephen and LeNova, Franko.

Stephen was a proud United States Navy veteran and a retired automotive parts salesman. Throughout his career, he worked for McAnary Ford, D & M Auto, and Portage Commons Auto Parts. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed the friendships and connections he made along the way.

Stephen was a man who loved his family deeply. His family meant everything to him, and he cherished the time spent with those he loved. He had a strong personality, a good sense of humor, and a heart that cared deeply for the people in his life. He was an avid hockey fan and proudly followed both Boston and Detroit. He also loved riding his Harley, enjoying the freedom of the open road and the simple pleasure of a good ride. These were some of the things that brought him happiness throughout his life. Stephen’s passing comes just two months after the loss of his beloved wife, Madeline Joan Franko, who passed away in August. Their time together was an important part of Stephen’s life, and he will be remembered for the love they shared.

Stephen is survived by his son, Dean Franko of Hobart; sisters, Virginia and Peg; brothers, Charles “Butch” and Rich; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Madeline Joan Franko; his daughters, Stephanie Franko and her infant sister; his parents and sister, Marie.

Stephen leaves behind a lifetime of memories and the love of a family who will miss him dearly. He will be remembered for his love of family, his pride in his military service, his passion for hockey, his Harley rides, and the unique spirit that made him who he was. Though he is gone, the memories he created and the love he gave will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
