Obituary

STEVE G. HURAK, age 85, of Hobart, IN passed away peacefully March 13, 2012. Steve was a retired teacher, a WWII Reservist and a Korean Combat Veteran. He was a loving father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by everyone whose life he touched.

Steve grew up in Castalia, Ohio and was a Margaretta High School graduate, class of 1944. He excelled in athletics and lettered in football, basketball, and track. Steve earned his Bachelor of Education from Bowling Green State University and was Chapter President of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He then earned his Masters of Education from IU Bloomington. As a young WWII Army Reservist he was assigned to the Associated Press Sports Wire in Honolulu, HI. In late 1950, Steve was called to action in North Korea, where he was a sharpshooter of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Regiment, and 1st Calvary. Steve was promoted to squad leader as both of his Commanding Officers were KIA. He saved the life of PFC McKinney in a gunfire fight during "Operation Killer" and was recommended for a Silver Star.

He was a District Manager for WT Grant Co. and Montgomery Ward and settled his family in Hobart, IN. He was one of the original staff members at the Gary Career Center and instructed Marketing at IUN.

Steve retired in 1994, and spent most of his time golfing and with his grandchildren. He was a supporter of Hobart Brickie sports and attended many games over the years.

He was also a proud member of VFW Post 9323 and American Legion Post 260 and Post 454.

Steve is preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth "Mitzy" Hurak , 1975; father, Steve Hurak, 1965; brothers, USAF Captain Tony "AJ" Hurak, 1994; USAF Colonel Joseph Hurak, 2008; Louie Orshoski, 2008; sister, Ann Daigle, 2012; and daughter, Cynthia Ann Gantman (Hurak), 1997.

Steve is survived by: daughter, Sandi Pero; son, Mark Hurak; grandchildren, Jaime Pero, Jody Pero, Jill Pero, and Jennifer Pero, Micah Gantman, Seth Gantman; sister, Helen Hessler; and wife for 36 years, Joann Hurak.

Cremation will be private. Burial in Castalia, OH. Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to VFW Post 9323. Memorial will be announced at a later date.
