Obituary

Susan Elizabeth Squire (nee Nelson), age 80, of Portage passed away Sunday, April 23, 2023. She was born on February 4, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois to the late John and Verena Nelson. Raised in Whiting, Indiana, Susan graduated from George Rogers Clark High School then went on to attend Indiana University, Bloomington, where she majored in German and Russian. On August 17, 1968, she married Walter Dean Squire at the Beck Chapel on the Bloomington campus. Susan was an avid fan of IU Basketball. She continued to earn a master's degree in Education and taught German for over thirty years at Portage and Hammond Clark high schools. Sue traveled to countries across Europe and enjoyed leading groups of German club students overseas.  Susan had a passion for languages and spoke Spanish, Russian, German and French and won a National Defense Scholarship to study and teach Russian. She loved the outdoors, especially living in the Indiana Dunes, where she enjoyed sunsets on Lake Michigan, cross country skiing, and hummingbirds. Susan was an elder in the Ogden Dunes community church and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed classical music, played the French Horn, and encouraged a love for playing music in her sons.

She is survived by her sons, Kurt (Constance) Squire, Erich (Kamryn) Squire, grandchildren, Walter, Warner, Oliver and Harrison Squire.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Verena Nelson, and her husband, Walter Dean Squire. Memorial contributions in Susan's name may be made to the Portage Township Food Pantry, 3590 Willowcreek Road, Portage.

A memorial service for Susan will take place Sunday, April 30,2023 at 4:00 p.m. at Ogden Dunes Community Church, 116 Hillcrest Road, Portage, IN 46368.
