Thelma Hickman (nee Brown), age 74, a lifelong resident of Hobart, IN passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, March 10, 2014 surrounded by her close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Leonard, in 2011; her parents, Forest (Brownie) and Jane Brown. She graduated from Merrillville High School, received her BA from Ball State University and her Master's Degree from Indiana State University. Thelma was a 2 ^nd and 3 ^rd grade teacher for over 30 years in the Merrillville School System. She was an avid cat lover and her cat Willie was at her side when she passed. Thelma volunteered after her retirement at the Independent Cat Society and also at her church helping wherever she could be of service. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Independent Cat Society, the Christian Assembly Church or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral service will be held Friday, March 14, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road Hobart, IN. with Reverend Mike Macchia Jr and Deacon Dale Walsh officiating. Burial will follow at Angelcrest Cemetery in Valparaiso, IN.  Visitation will take place from 12:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home.
