Obituary

Thelma Jean Wright, affectionately known as "Sis" age 73, of Portage, Indiana passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025. Thelma was born on September 1, 1952, in Durant, Mississippi to the late Mary Alice (Grant) Wright and John Allen Wright. She later moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she began her adult journey and built a meaningful life rooted in faith, love, and service. A proud graduate of Durant Attendance Center, Class of 1971, Thelma soon relocated to Chicago, where she worked as a Case Manager for the Illinois Department of Human Services for over 30 years. Throughout her career, she touched countless lives with her patience, kindness, and compassion. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and words of wisdom inspired and encouraged people of all ages. Thelma accepted Christ at an early age at Old Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev I.H. Watkins and maintained a strong personal faith throughout her life. Although she was not active in the church in her later years, Thelma never lost sight of her belief in God or the foundation of faith that guided her values, actions, and love for others. She often expressed gratitude for God's grace and carried a quiet but steadfast faith that touched the hearts of everyone around her. Thelma had a joyful spirit and a love for the simple pleasures in life. She was an avid WWE fan who rarely missed a match, cheering on her favorite wrestlers with enthusiasm. She enjoyed occasional group outings to the casino, where she cherished laughter and fellowship with friends. In her later years, Thelma found joy in arts and crafts, creating beautiful, thoughtful pieces for her loved ones. Above all, she treasured every moment with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life and brought her endless joy and pride.

Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Alice and John Allen Wright; her grandmother, Rosie Hardy; her siblings, Rosezene, Dorothy, Willie, Mary C, and Alice Jean; and her brothers-in-law, Ellis Sr., Monroe, and Paul.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Mar'Que Collier (Jasmine); her beloved grandchildren, Chase, Omad, Zakyus, and Avianna; her sisters, Charlene George and Ella Ruth Wright; her brothers-in-law, Kevin Brown and Nan Stokes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:23
