Troy Wayne Mayes, 83, of Hobart, Indiana, and formerly of Glen Park, passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
He was born July 11, 1935, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, one of five children of Luther and Elsie Mayes, who preceded him in death. On Sept. 1, 1955, he married Helen Novak in Gary, Indiana, who preceded him in death in May 2009.
Troy was a longtime electrician before retiring from Inland Steel Co. in East Chicago, Indiana, where he worked in the Field Forces department. He also worked as a bartender for many years at the 12/20 Bowling Center and Wilson's Lounge in Gary.
He enjoyed photography, woodwork, Corvettes, boats, dogs, tropical fish, and had been an avid bowler. Troy was a skilled electrician, carpenter and craftsman, who built his family's first home in Glen Park, and many beautiful pieces of furniture and stained glass. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and the Valpo Vettes club.
He is survived by three sons, Jeff (Lisa) Mayes of Westville, Indiana; Scott (Lorri) Mayes of Mesa, Arizona; and Mark Mayes of Mesa, Arizona; a sister, Ruby Huff of Cape Coral, Florida; five grandchildren, Shawna Mayes Smith of Hobart, Indiana; Allison Mayes of Chicago, Illinois; Julianne Cornfield of Brooklyn, New York; Marisa Mayes of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Vanessa Mayes of Naples, Florida; two great-grandsons, Nathaniel and Collin Smith of Hobart, Indiana; and his African grey parrot, Baby.
