Valerie E. Barnhouse, age 95 of Hobart (previously a longtime resident of Gary, IN and later Valparaiso, IN) passed away Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Chesterton Manor.  She was born in Monessen, PA on August 1, 1923 to the late Michael and Julie (nee Wadas) Germack.  She graduated from East Chicago Roosevelt High School in 1941, and DePaul University in 1945. After graduation, Valerie worked for the University of Chicago and the Oriental Institute.  She was a dedicated homemaker, an avid reader and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star #164, Valparaiso. She re-entered the workforce after her children were grown and was employed at Calumet Securities Corporation and Meridian Mutual Insurance from which she retired.

Valerie is survived by her children Thomas (Jill) Barnhouse, Claudia (John) Kora and Julie Walker:  Grandchildren, Erin (Greg) Degleffetti, Lucas Kora, Andrew (Sara) Kora, Katelynn (Clay) Tingley, Zachary (Amy Watts) Walker, Molly Walker,  Mallory Barnhouse, Tommy Barnhouse, Matthew (Joy) Barnhouse, Peter Barnhouse, and seven (7) great-grandchildren.

Valerie was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Barnhouse; son, James Barnhouse; and her parents.
