Vernon David Hobbs, age 92, of Hobart, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart. He was born in Davis, Oklahoma on August 6, 1925 to the late Jesse and Pearl (nee Green) Hobbs. Vern proudly served his country in The United States Army Airforce during World War II. His "claim to fame" was flying the film of The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki nonstop from Pearl Harbor to Washington D.C. in 17 hours and 21 minutes. Vern will be remembered as easy going and will be missed by many.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife, Nancy (nee Dault) Hobbs; daughter, Sandra Taylor; step daughter, Debbie Allen-Wolfe; step daughter in law, Marianne Lahaie; step son, Terry Lahaie; step son in law, Greg Wolfe; 3 grandchildren, Richard McKinna (fiancee Krystine), Michelle (Jeff) Oley and Michael Hobbs; sister, Nena Kudrow; brother Chuck Hobbs; brother in law, Alan Dault; sisters in law, Jeanne Jolley, Mary Rockstraw; and many other loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in Vernon's honor, to American Legion, Post 100, 1899 Central Ave. Lake Station, IN 46405.
A memorial service, with military honors for Vernon will take place Sunday, June 17, 2018 at 4:00 pm with Rev. Thomas E. Mischler officiating at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, IN 46342. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. For more information, please call 219-942-2109.
