Vernon H. Stangebye, age 73, of Portage and formerly of Chicago, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. He was born on April 24, 1952, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Norman and Marjorie Stangebye.
Vernon was a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, and shortly after completing his studies, he set out on an unforgettable journey—hitchhiking across Europe and Africa. That experience was just the beginning of a lifetime of adventure, as he went on to visit more than 50 countries around the world. His love of travel became his life’s work, and he enjoyed a successful career as an international corporate travel agent for many years.
An adventurous spirit at heart, Vernon embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He was known to take to the open road on his bicycle, once riding from Chicago to Niles, Michigan, and even on to Wisconsin Dells. He delighted in trying new foods, exploring different cultures, and soaking in the vibrant energy of downtown Chicago, a place he truly loved.
Vernon is survived by his brother, Dr. Ronald (Susan) Stangebye; his sisters, Sonja Anderson, Cynthia Razo, and Lynaya Stangebye; his cherished feline companion, Cecelia; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Marjorie Stangebye; and his brothers-in-law, Larry Anderson and Gilbert Razo, Sr.
Memorial contributions in Vernon’s name may be made to the Hobart Humane Society in honor of his love for cats.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Wyndmoor of Portage for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Vernon.
Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 207 North Kelly Street, Hobart.
