Viola Drozdal, Age 90, of Hobart, formerly of Glen Park, passed away , November 29, 2015. A "coal miner's daughter", she was born January 1, 1925, in Alicia No. 2, Pa. to the late, Francis & Anna (Paszko) Sobieraj. Viola's father passed away in a mine accident when she was 14 months old and her mother remarried, Bruno Marazsky ,"Pap", who took on the role of loving father. She graduated from Masontown High School in 1943 and moved to Detroit to work as a "Rosie the Riveter" on the B24 plane during WWII. She moved to Gary, in 1946 and worked at Bear Brand hosiery and US Steel. On May 19, 1951, she married Edward Drozdal, who preceded her in death in 2002.
She is survived by daughters, Janice ( Charlie) Harrison and Roberta "Robin" (Dennis) Muller. Grandchildren, Michelle (nee McAdoo) (Nathan) Bowker, Andrew Muller, and David Muller. Step-grand children, Conor Harrison & Lauren (Ken) Rossato. Great grandchildren, Abigail Bowker & Mason Bowker. Brothers, Stanley (Madge)Marazsky, Richard ( Rita)Marazsky, and Ronald (JoAnn Marazsky). Many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by siblings , Genevieve Marazsky, Lawrence "Boz" Sobieraj, Bridget "Blanche" Urban, and Joseph Marazsky.
She was a former member of Blessed Sacrament, Gary, In. and is a current member of St. Bridget, Hobart. She was also a member of American Legion Post #207 Auxillary, St. Peter & Paul Harvest House, and Blessed Sacrament Seniors luncheon group. Vi was famous for her homemade bread (Nana bread) & nut roll. She loved to crochet, including making full bed spreads and tablecloths, gardening, watching the hummingbirds in summer, and LOVED to read and do word search puzzles.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 10:00 am at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 568 E. 2nd St., Hobart, with Fr. Dominic Bertino officiating, beginning with 9:30 am prayers at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart and then processing to church. Entombment to follow at Calumet Park Mausoleum.
