Obituary
VIRGINIA H. LIGDA, age 87, of Portage, passed away at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso on Monday, September 10, 2012. She was born on June 15, 1925 in Stratford, SD to Paul and Gertrude Stange. She was employed by Northport Hornbachers in Fargo, ND. Virginia married James Ligda on September 10, 1982 at Nativity of Our Savior Church in Portage.
Virginia is survived by her husband of 30 years, James Ligda; 3 daughters, Bobbi (Terry) Rehder of Lake Park, MN, Lonni (Warren) Hayden, Hickson, ND, Sandy (Moon) Smulders of Chesterton; 1 stepdaughter, Jan (David) Bergstedt of Valparaiso; 3 stepsons, Paul (Joan) Wilson of Quincy, IL, James (Kathleen) Wilson of Stevens Point, WI, Michael (Cindy) Ligda of Reno, NV; 7 grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren, and 9 step great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Donald (Dorothy) Stange of Littleton, CO, and Dale (Linda) Stange of Sun Tan Valley, AZ; 2 sisters, Rolanda Vik, Ardelene Stange and sister-in-law, Elsie Stange, all of Aberdeen, SD; other loving family and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by daughter, VonCeil Jenson; her parents; sister, Barbara Quill; brother, Paul Stange, Jr.
She graduated from Stratford High School in 1943. She married Robert Jenson in 1945. They later divorced. She married Carl Rehder in March 1970. He passed away in January of 1981. She was a great mom, grandma and great grandma. Virginia loved baking for family and church friends. She will be missed dearly.
She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Portage and was a member of the Slovak Auxiliary of Gary and the American Legion Post 520 Ladies Auxiliary. Virginia enjoyed playing at Nativity Monday Night Bingo and working the election polls.
A funeral service for Virginia will be Friday, September 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 6540 Central Ave., Portage, IN, with Rev. Fred Hoover officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Portage. Visitation for Virginia will be Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage, IN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Please call (219) 762-3013 or go online at
